Possibly one of my most favourite of all of Winifred's paintings Tablecloth c1934 is just such a simple scene of domesticity and home life. For me it's the little things in life that give me the most joy and this painting truely encaptures it.
Finding the perfect piece of faded vintage sack cloth for the tablecloth was a joy, faded in the bottom left hand corner in just the right spot to be perhaps worn from use, perhaps just a shadow.
Trying to recreate a sense of movement in the flowers and foliage is always going to be a challenge in fabric, you cannot mix fabrics in the same way you can paint, but by choosing hand dyed fabrics, varigated threads you can in some way go towards achieving this.
The placement of flowers blooming outside of the frame of vintage prints that surround my version of this painting will not be held by a border and move beyond it's confinds.
It's made using a combination of hand and machine sewing techniques giving a varity of marks and textures denied by using just one.
